How do communities of women meaningfully participate in their individual and collective safety? How do they contribute to initiatives that strengthen their voice and leadership? What are examples of their success in responding to GBV after a disaster? This course on Community-based Solutions and Preventive Education draws from personal to the collective action of women in combating gender-based violence (GBV). It also capacitates participants to reflect on their own community’s experience of GBV.
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Narrate the history and examples of women’s rights organizations who organized community women into forming GBV watch groups, such as pioneer GBVIE initiatives Bantay Banay and Bantay Bugaw;
- Identify the different ways by which women can raise the awareness of local communities through community-based, pop-ed prevention education; and
- Understand how the culture of silence, impunity, and victim-blaming serve significant barriers to women and girls’ safety and strategies to dismantle these.
